DIY Superhero Pumpkin

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a Superhero PUMPKIN!

Learn how to make this cute superhero pumpkin with your kids! It’s an easy and fun craft to help you make memories with your kid this fall season.

We have tried pumpkin carving in the past but they ended up rotting on our front porch. Not to mention messing with the pumpkin guts and seeds (although fun to squish with our hands) were really yucky. So, when I discovered artificial pumpkin decorating, I way on board! As a bonus, we can keep our little hero for years to come!

One of the best things about decorating our super hero pumpkin was that I could let my son be creative and do his thing with paint!

  • Small/medium sized craft pumpkin

  • Sheet of bright blue felt (for cape)
  • Acrylic matte paint (White, bright red, bright blue)
  • Sharpie (thin tip)
  • Scissors
  • Paint brushes (this is what I used)
  • Paint pallete or paper plate (this is the one I used)

  • Hot glue gun (this is a multi-temp glue gun – highly recommend multi temp for all types of materials!)
  • Large/kitchen tall trash bag (for DIY kids smock)

DIY Kids Painting Smock

If you are like me and don’t enjoy washing painting smocks, this DIY one is for you! Just cut arm and neck holes in a large trash bag or kitchen size bag. Place over your kid then cinch and tie between their legs. It’s the perfect throw away smock for all of your craft projects. Save their clothes and your sanity!

Instructions

1. Paint your Pumpkin

First, paint the entire pumpkin white (even the bottom). Let it dry.

2. Make Mask and Cape

To start, you will want to google and print out a mask and cape. Cut them out. Next, trace the mask and cape onto the felt with a thin tip sharpie. (I did a red mask and blue cape). After that, cut out the mask and cape from the felt.

If you want to add an initial to the cape: Cut out a letter from the opposite color of the cape. Hot glue onto the cape.

Set aside the mask and cape to attach later.

3. Paint Pumpkin with Accent Colors

Now you can have your little one add their artistic touch. I had my little guy paint red first (only giving him the red paint) Then let him paint with blue. This way, nothing turned purple.

4. Attach the Mask and Cape

Lastly, on the low setting hot glue the mask and cape. I made sure to glue them on the exact opposite side of one another. Fairly centered. You will want to glue the cape so it hangs nicely.

Now you have the cutest superhero pumpkin. Ready to save the day!
