DIY Unicorn Pumpkin

This DIY Unicorn pumpkin is so stinkin’ adorable! And super easy to make too! With just a few supplies and paint, your kiddo can have their very own unicorn pumpkin. The best part is, no yucky pumpkin guts and rotting. Hooray! You can even save this little cutie pumpkin for next fall as well.

In addition to a cute decor element for fall, pumpkin decorating is a great activity to do with your kids. My crew laughed, made a small mess and most importantly, made memories.

Unicorn everything is all the rage. Here at Honest Delight we decided to hop on the band wagon and create a unicorn pumpkin! Let’s get to it:

Materials

Several of the materials I picked up at my local craft store. A few of the items from Amazon are listed below too!

supplies for pumpkin decorating

  • Small/medium sized craft pumpkin
  • Small styrofoam cone
  • Wooden skewer (I used these)
  • Sheet of black sparkly felt (or printed eyelashes)
  • Acrylic matte paint (White, gold, and other colors for the top doodle designs)
  • Scissors
  • Paint brushes
  • Paint pallete or paper plate (this is the one I used)
  • Cup of water (for painting)
  • Paper towels
  • Hot glue gun (this is a multi-temp glue gun – highly recommend multi temp for all types of materials!)
  • Large/kitchen tall trash bag (for DIY kids smock)

DIY Kids Painting Smock

Both of my kiddos love crafts so these DIY smocks have come in handy. No washing. Just toss in the trash when they are done creating their masterpiece!

Simply cut holes for their arms and neck. Then tie in between their knees to fully protect their clothes. If the neck hole is too big, you can tuck the loose edges of the bag into their tee shirt. Works like a charm! No cost, less mess and less hassle!

DIY Unicorn Pumpkin

1.  Paint Pumpkin White

First, paint the entire pumpkin white (even the bottom). Let it dry.

2. Shape and Texturize Unicorn Horn

Next, cut styrofoam cone to a point (top of the cone is flat, shape to make it pointy). Then, take scissors and drag swirl lines across the cone. (To create a swirl texture for the unicorn horn).

3. Paint Unicorn Horn

Now, you will stick the skewer into the bottom of the styrofoam cone. Then, paint the styrofoam with your gold paint. Be sure to get into all the foam crevices with your paintbrush. Let it dry.

4. Doodle and Decorate your Pumpkin

Once the white paint is dry on the pumpkin, let your kiddo draw doodles on the top. There are no mess ups or mistakes. Let them make it their own!

5. Attach the Unicorn Horn

When the gold paint on the horn is dry, trim the skewer down with scissors (approx. 2 inches) and insert into pumpkin (top side of the pumpkin on the side of the stem)

6. Attache the Eye Lashes

Print and cutout eye lashes (you can actually use the computer paper cutouts or the sparkle felt, both work)! For felt eye lashes, trace printed eye lashes with a light colored sharpie and cut out with your scissors.

Lastly, hot glue eyelashes onto the unicorn. Slightly under and centered with the horn.

And you are done! Now you have the cutest unicorn pumpkin. Ever. 🙂
